Patan (or Lalitpur)
7 Km from Kathmandu. Named Lalitpur (City of beauty) by its founder king (299 AD), Patan is above all known by the name of "The city of thousand golden roofs". Formerly separated from the capital city , Patan and Kathmandu are only separated today by the river Bagmati. Here we visit mainly the Royal Palace with its statues of Lord Hanuman and Lord Vishnu, the very beautiful Krishna Temple on which is seated a Garuda perched on a high pillar, the Kumbheshwar, one of the rare pagodas with five storeys still standing , and the Temple of Maha Buddha where every brick is decorated with an effigy of Buddha. Apparently there are more than 9000 bricks…This visit should be conducted preferably in the evening for a better light on the façades of the Palace.
The Tibetan refugee camp
The Jawalakhel village, near Patan, shelters an important community of Tibetans who took shelter here since the invasion of Tibet. This community has preserved its customs and its handicrafts, particularly the weaving of carpets of very good quality.
Afternoon sightseeing in Kathmandu and Swayambunath:
Kathmandu
Capital of the country, Kathmandu appears to be a tangle of Temples, of sanctuaries and Pagodas. Here one should visit especially the Durbar Square, a strange mix of temples , towers , pillars, stalls filled with merchandise and houses with finely carved wooden balconies and windows , The ancient Royal Palace and the statue of Hanuman Dhoka the monkey god, the Kumari's Palace - this girl child god is chosen at a very young age since the last two centuries and is said to be the reincarnation of Goddess Kali . Other than these famous monuments, there are a large number of temples and sanctuaries, small little streets, and a host of markets and shops in Kathmandu. This Kathmandu should be discovered individually, by walking at random, and largely justifies a day of discovery all by oneself.
Swayambunath
Situated about 4 km to the west of Kathmandu. It is the most ancient stupa in the valley (2500years old) and one of the most ancient Buddhist sanctuaries in the world . Built on a small hill, large eyes are painted on the four sides of the base in vivid colours, the best image of Nepal. This should be visited in the late afternoon in the light of the setting sun. Place of worship and pilgrimage Lamaïste, religious ceremonies are carried out all the time. Return to your hotel at the end of the afternoon.

Visits to Bhadgaon, Bodnath and Pashupatinath:
Bhadgaon (or Bhaktapur)
16 Km to the east of Kathmandu, also called the city of the pious, Bhadgaon is one of the three royal cities which has best conserved its medieval aspect. There is an abundance of Newar masterpieces of architecture and temples . Amongst these monuments is the Durbar Square, which must be visited the Royal palace, the Sun Dhoka (golden gate), the Pashupatinath temple and the Nyatapola the majestic pagoda with five floors. One should also remember that Bhadgaon is the city of potters and it is very interesting to walk through the streets and discover the work of these crastsmen.
Pashupatinath
5 km to the east of Kathmandu, on the banks of the river Bagmati, Pashupatinath is called the Benaras of Nepal. This huge temple is dedicated to Shiva (only hindus are allowed to enter) and there is always an uninterrupted flow of pilgrims , of sadhus and Nepalese who come to venus sacrifier aux rites des crémations dans les eaux saintes de cet affluent du Ganges.
Bodnath
8 km to the east of Kathmandu, the grand Bodhnath stupa is a city inside the city. The large circular stupa represents the universe and one goes around it always in the clockwise direction while turning the prayermills at the same time. The stupa is a very lively pace of pilgrimage , and is encircled by ancient newar dwellings and monastries.
